Southern Utah Practical Shooting Range re-opens

The new venue has towering berms and seems to hold water pretty well. The club has moved back in and is slowly ramping up operations. Glen Wong, my successor as President there, did an amazing job navigating tough waters. Washington County stepped up and invested. I think the end result will be continue to improve as the club gets stronger after being inactive for over a year.

Royal Enfield Int 650

The Royal Enfield Intercepter 650 is the most popular new bike in the UK right now. It’s a “retro” bike – looking like Royal Enfield offerings of the 60/70s, but with modern features like ABS and fuel-injection.

I now own one. (-: The photograph above is from its maiden ride.

I sold my Africa Twin, mainly because it was big and I wasn’t gonna do long tours. I then bought this for $4500. And it’s fun. I love zipping around on it. It’s lighter. Shorter. Easier. I notice that people walk around and look at it when it’s parked.

Is it the bike the Africa Twin was? Heck no. It’s just fine though. In my “perfect” world I’d probably tweak the front suspension a bit, it’s harsh on pot holes. But other than that, very nice.


Trying Planks

A couple of days ago I learned that the Marine Corp was changing from crunches to planks as the abdominal portion of their Physical Fitness Test. I didn’t learn the minimum time, but was told that 4 minutes yielded max points on the test.

So I tried a plank, and got to 1 minute, by which time I was quivering jelly, with the quivering starting at about 20 seconds. It was hard.

The USMC had seen back and other injuries from doing so many crunches. So I support this. Crunches are tough on your back.

I’m going to add planks to the squats, child pose, and other stretches I do after my 25-30 minute 90c sauna routine. Let the sweat drip!

TLDR: Subtract 5 Simple Things to Become Happier

TLDR: Happiness is not a destination, but a process. First _SUBTRACT_ things that cause you to be unhappy.

Five simple low hanging fruit are:
1. cut out negative information (i.e. the news!),
2. get rid of the 20% of things causing 80% of the unhappiness
3. subtract negative people from your life
4. don’t try and “prove” yourself
5. don’t attach happiness to goals or possessions.

Ken’s Take:

The last one is tough – the “hedonistic treadmill” takes your gains and makes them your new normal, making you revert to your base unhappiness. It’s easy for me to say “hop off” – to a lot of people I’m pretty darn rich with lots of “stuff”. All I’ll say is that it isn’t nearly what I “could” have, and I certainly don’t care what car or house other people have.

Negative people… this is tough because sometimes they are in _your_ family! Hmmmm… honor your responsibilities, be passively brutal to all the others. Don’t fight, just don’t engage, or spend time around them.

As an aside, I write the TLDR section (Too Long Didn’t Read) to make sure I understand what the author wrote by explaining it as simply and in as little of my own bias as I can manage.

FFT – you never heard of it but you are using it right now.

I’m not an expert in the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). I first used it in 1985(ish) and have then used it in most decades since, including 2020. All facets of modern life are touched by the FFT, which is a fast way of doing a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), which is a non-continuous way to do the Fourier Transform (which most people learn in Differential Equations math course in college (if they learn it at all).

FFTs are generally used to turn time-series data (for instance a recording of your voice) into frequency domain (showing how much energy was in each frequency range measured in the sample). But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, and probably poorly explained!

My most recent use was to evaluate using certain characteristics of the FFT to replace expensive tensor convolutions in a convolutional neural network. It would have saved about 2/3rds of the convolution operations, which is terrific, except that in our particular network architecture the convolutions were a tiny fraction of the computational expense, so we opted for simple over perfect.

My Company Photo

We just took a company photo. We need to do this more often… last one was about 6 years ago! These are the Utah portion of my company’s staff, except for those out on COVID quarantine. I’m in the middle. I work with fun, happy, cool, and smart people.


TLDR: Basic jobs are better than basic incomes

TLDR: Basic jobs programs can be tested, fail with positive outcomes, and can be integrated with existing programs, and aren’t perceived as unfair by people who don’t get their benefits.


Ken’s Take:

UBI is a “neat” idea that can’t be tested very well. Tests so far aren’t broad enough to change behavior. I also worry quite a bit about when they fail at a grand scale, and they will, about a generation of people that never worked. That doesn’t sound good.

I prefer, instead, to provide jobs if need be, but not by welfare, but by funding businesses that hire.

Related, end the war on drugs, and make it harder to make single families. But those are other posts…
